Introduction
VMware allows remote desktop login from personal laptop and home computers. VMware was chosen to support the Green Initiative that the College of Engineering and Computer Science has undertaken with the addition of the new Platinum Level LEED Certification Green Building.
Implementing what is known as Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) Engineering is now providing your same desktop as if you were in our labs.

Simple connectivity - Horizon Client for Mac is tightly integrated with VMware Horizon 6 and VMware Horizon 7 for simple setup and connectivity. Quickly reconnect to your remote desktop or published application by selecting shortcuts in Horizon Client. Mac users interested in Horizon client 3.2.1 for windows generally download: VMware Horizon Client 4.10 Free Establish a remote connection to a VMware Horizon View virtual desktop from your Mac.
Windows
NOTE: View client does not work with Microsoft Surface Windows RT
Downloading the VMWare View Software
- Download the VMWare Horizon View Client from: https://www.vmware.com/go/viewclients
- Do NOT choose the VMware Horizon View Client for Windows 10 UWP
Installing the VMWare View Software
- Install the VMware View Client software (just like any other software installs) and accepting the defaults.
- When it asks for the server name please enter: portal.eng.fau.edu
*You will be required to reboot your computer
Running the VMWare View Software
- Username: FAUNetID (without the @fau.edu)
- Password: Your FAU Password (same one as myfau, blackboard, etc)
- Domain: FAU
- Once you have logged in you will get a list of desktops available to you, unless told otherwise, please use:

Downloading the VMWare View Software
Download Vmware Horizon Client For Macos
- Download the VMWare Horizon View Client for Mac from: https://www.vmware.com/go/viewclients
Installing the VMWare View Software
- Launch the DMG file that was downloaded in prior step
- Drag the VMWare Horizon Client icon to the Applications Folder icon to install
Running the VMWare View Software
- Launch the VMware View Client from the Applications folder
- Click the Add server icon
- In the Hostname dialog enter: portal.eng.fau.edu
- Click Continue
- Once you have logged in you will get a list of desktops available to you, unless told otherwise, please use:

Web Browser
- Using either Firefox or Chrome, visit https://portal.eng.fau.edu and click on the right icon that looks like a computer Monitor.
- Login with your FAU Credentials
- Username: FAUNetID (without the @fau.edu)
- Password: Your FAU Password (same one as myfau, blackboard, etc)
- Domain: FAU
Chromebook
There is a VM ware client in the google play / web store.
- Open the web / play store and Search for vmware.
- Find the “VMware Horizon Client” and click “ADD TO CHROME”.
- Confirm by clicking “Add app”.
- Wait for the app to install.
- Click on the “VMware Horizon Client” icon to start.
- Enter the following information:
- Server Name or Address: portal.eng.fau.edu
- Server Description: FAU
- click Connect.
- Enter your FAU username and Password.
- Click Connect again.
- Once connected it will show you the Pools (Virtual Machine Clusters) you have access to (All Engineering Students, etc.).
- Click on the Pool you want to connect to.
- You are now connected to our cloud environment.
iPAD
Downloading the VMWare View Software
- Visit the app store and search for “VMware View for iPad“ published by VMware, Inc.
Running the VMWare View Software
- Launch the app and click the “Add view connection server”
- Connect to the server: portal.eng.fau.edu
Android

- Open the Market Place app and search for “VMware View for Android“ published by VMware, Inc.
Running the VMWare View Software
- Launch VMware View from Applications
- Click on the “Add View Connection Server” and enter portal.eng.fau.edu
Linux
- Open “System Settings”
- Click on “Software & Updates”
- Go to the “other software” tab
- Put a check mark next to “Canonical Partners” and “Canonical Partners (Source Code)”
- Click “Close” and click “reload”
- Close “System Settings”
- Open a terminal (CTRL-ALT-t) and type “sudo -s”
- type “apt-get update”
- type “apt-cache search vmware”. This should display all vmware packages available for installation. One should be “vmware-view-client”
- type “apt-get install vmware-view-client”. When the system askes “do you want to continue” hit enter.
- type “exit” twice to close the terminal window (1st to close out of sudo and the 2nd time to close the window)
- Open VMware view client
- The View Connection Server for FAU Engineering is “portal.eng.fau.edu”
- click connect to connect to our cloud.
- When entering your FAU username and password, make sure to change the domain from IRM to FAU
Printing from VMware View:
PC Users:
- If you are at home, then any printer that you have will be listed and you will see your local printer when selecting the application’s print menu.

- Printing from the MAC is not yet possible , this is a known issue with VMWARE and will be addressed in a future release of the MAC client. Sorry for the headache this may cause.

End users open Horizon Client to connect to remote desktops and applications from a Mac physical machine. You install Horizon Client on Mac client systems from a disk image file.
- Verify that the client system uses a supported operating system. See System Requirements for Mac Clients.
- Verify that you can log in as an administrator on the client system.
- If you plan to use the RDP display protocol to connect to a remote desktop, verify that the Mac client system has Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac from Microsoft, version 2.0 or later installed.
- Verify that you have the URL for a download page that contains the Horizon Client installer. This URL might be the VMware Downloads page at http://www.vmware.com/go/viewclients, or it might be the URL for a Connection Server instance.
Procedure
- From your Mac, browse to the URL for downloading the Horizon Client installer file. The file name format is VMware-Horizon-Client-y.y.y-xxxxxx.dmg. xxxxxx is the build number and y.y.y is the version number.
- Double-click the .dmg file to open it and click Agree. The contents of the disk image appear in a Horizon Client Finder window.
- In the Finder window, drag the VMware Horizon Client icon to the Applications folder icon. If you are not logged in as an administrator user, you are prompted for an administrator user name and password.
Start Horizon Client and verify that you can connect to a remote desktop or application. See Connect to a Remote Desktop or Application.
